bstract: I will present work on deformable and deployable structures, in particular flat-fabricated models that can be actuated to deform into 3D surface structures. A key concept is geometric abstraction of the underlying physical deformation mechanisms. These abstractions help classify the underlying shape spaces and provide effective computational tools to initialize non-linear gradient-based optimizations to find stable deployed surfaces that closely approximate a desired target design.
