Abstract: We consider variational inequality problem which equivalently can be posed as minimization problem with gradient constraint. Karush-Kuhn-Tucker system leads to the non-linear partial differential equation which lacks Frechet differentiability to apply Newton method. In order to develop semismooth Newton method in function spaces we regularize the problem via augmented lagrangian method but we still need higher regularity for the gradient to use the chain rule for the Newton differentiability. To deal with this difficulty we perturb the problem and show that the solution of the perturbed problem converges to the solution of the regularized problem as perturbation parameter goes to zero.
