Abstract: Simulations of granular flows are an effective tool to gain deeper understanding and subsequently, optimization of processes such as fluidized beds, mixing, powder transport, etc. The discrete element method (DEM) is commonly used for simulating these kind of processes. The particle shape plays a crucial role in modelling the process as realistic as possible. There are several approaches for handling complex shapes, e.g. multispheres, superquadrics. This talk presents the usage of convex polyhedral particles in DEM. Although polyhedras are computationally expensive, they are the only way to model sharply-edged particles realistically. The presented algorithm is implemented in a GPU-based DEM software.[hide abstract]
