Abstract: The basis for this work are black-and-white photographs of wafers from
austriamicrosystems AG. Each of the 4773 x 4773 pixels of such an image is
a grayscale value, that is a value between zero (=black) and 255 (=white).
Our primary aim is to judge the image contrast by analyzing the grayscale
frequencies. Therefore we take a look at the histogram of the grayscale
counts. Since these histograms exhibit multi-modal behavior, we use a
finite mixture model of normals (or Poissons since we are dealing with
counts) to describe the empirical distributions.
