Abstract: We consider a generalization of the widely studied selection problem. For given integers p,q,n and coefficients α1,...,αn and β1,...,βn, consider the linear form Σi ∈ A αi + Σj ∈ B βj, where A,B are p-element subsets of {1,...,n} with at least q elements in common. It is known that the optimal A,B where the form is minimal can be computed in O(qn2) time. We show how this can be improved. This can then also be applied to the robust recoverable selection problem to obtain better results. [hide abstract] | |
